About

This is a draft of a catalog of the books at Steepletop, Edna St. Vincent Millay's home in Austerlitz, NY. After Edna St. Vincent Millay's death in 1950, her sister Norma Millay inherited the house and kept the books and many other items as they were: Steepletop is now a historic house museum run by the Millay Society.

Although it lists over 1200 books and contains some information about copies signed by Millay, the catalog is decidedly incomplete: more than half of the books listed lack edition information, and not all books at Steepletop are listed here. Please do not base any major conclusions on anything you see or don't see here. Catalog data is also available at http://zotero.org/groups/steepletop_library.

The catalog draws on two sources: a partial inventory of the books at Steepletop begun in 1950 and a card index begun in 2003 by librarian and Millay Society volunteer Maureen O'Connor. A brief account of the catalog project appeared in the Millay Society newsletter in the spring of 2012.

Embedded books in featured items are not scans of the copies at Steepletop: they are scanned copies of the same editions of those titles from either the Internet Archive or Hathitrust, copies originally held in university libraries. One day, perhaps, we will be able to scan the Steepletop copies and examine them for marginalia and other interesting features.

This site was built by Amanda French with help from Maureen O'Connor, who has directed efforts to expand the catalog.
